ITAR Injection Molding Process With Xometry

Xometry—and all ITAR registered molding shops— follow guidelines to ensure that:
- All personnel and subcontractors are aware of and observe the stipulations of the molder’s ITAR certification
- Undergo thorough internal and external audits to ensure ITAR compliance maintenance
- Vet the origins and production of all components designed, developed, configured, adapted, or modified for military applications controlled under the USML
- Verify that intellectual property rights of sensitive military information and technologies are being protected
Injection Molding Finishes Available
Standard Finish
Moldmaker's choice of finish. Typically SPI B-3 to D-3 depending on geometry and drafts. Interior, non-cosmetic faces, are typically as-machined.
MoldTech Finishes
Range of finishes including matte, swirls, lines, and patterns. Finishes include: MoldTech - MT11010 MoldTech - MT11020 MoldTech - MT11030 MoldTech - MT112XX MoldTech - MT114XX MoldTech - MT116XX.
- MoldTech MT11010 — Fine matte texture, 0.001 in (0.025 mm) deep, needing roughly 1.5° of draft. The finest of the three most common MT110xx grades.
- MoldTech MT11020 — Medium matte texture, 0.0015 in (0.038 mm) deep, needing roughly 2.5° of draft. A more pronounced, uniform grain than MT11010.
- MoldTech MT11030 — Coarse matte texture, 0.002 in (0.051 mm) deep, needing roughly 3° of draft. The deepest of the three most common grades, for grip and defect hiding.
SPI Finishes
Range of finishes from Grade 3 diamond / high polish to 320 stone low polish. Finishes include: SPI A-1, SPI A-2, SPI A-3, SPI B-1, SPI B-2, SPI B-3, SPI C-1, SPI C-2, SPI C-3, and SPI D-1.
- SPI A-1 — Super high gloss, polished with a Grade #3 (6000-grit) diamond buff to Ra 0.012–0.025 µm. Used for lenses, light pipes, and mirror-finish cosmetic parts.
- SPI A-2 — High gloss, polished with a Grade #6 (3000-grit) diamond buff to Ra 0.025–0.05 µm. For cosmetic surfaces that don't need a full mirror finish.
- SPI A-3 — Normal gloss, polished with a Grade #15 (1200-grit) diamond buff to Ra 0.05–0.10 µm. The most economical of the polished A grades.
- SPI B-1 — Fine semi-gloss, finished with 600-grit paper to Ra 0.05–0.10 µm. Smooth appearance that still hides minor tooling marks.
- SPI B-2 — Medium semi-gloss, finished with 400-grit paper to Ra 0.10–0.15 µm. A common choice for general-purpose cosmetic surfaces.
- SPI B-3 — Normal semi-gloss, finished with 320-grit paper to Ra 0.28–0.32 µm. Slight visible texture, suited to less critical cosmetic faces.
- SPI C-1 — Fine matte, polished with 600-grit stone to Ra 0.35–0.40 µm. Diffuses light and hides fingerprints and small blemishes.
- SPI C-2 — Medium matte, polished with 400-grit stone to Ra 0.45–0.55 µm. For functional surfaces where gloss isn't wanted.
- SPI C-3 — Normal matte, polished with 320-grit stone to Ra 0.63–0.70 µm. The most economical of the stone-polished grades.
- SPI D-1 — Satin texture, dry blasted with #11 glass bead over a 600-grit stone base to Ra 0.80–1.00 µm. Uniform low-sheen appearance.
As Molded
No secondary polishing or grinding. Part will show tooling marks.
